Endorsements

BOULDER CHAMBER: One of the four first endorsements in the Chamber's 106 year history.

"Fenno showed a strong understanding of the issues and the ability to communicate his common sense values with exceptional clarity and intelligence. We appreciated his focus on key elements of the built environment and their importance to the long term viability and liveability of our community" Sep 20, 2011

BOULDER OUTDOOR COALTION: 9/25/2011

http://boulderoutdoorcoalition.org/

Boulder Outdoor Coalition Endorses Four Candidates.

  • Fenno Hoffman
  • George Karakehian
  • Dan King
  • Ken Wilson

All four candidates exhibit the following qualities:

    • Have demonstrated an open and sensible approach to community issues – they do not bring in a personal agenda – they listen to everyone, and then make rational decisions.
    • Are pragmatic thinkers, who wish to act in the best interests of all citizens of Boulder, not entrenched interest groups.
    • Are not stuck imitating the past, but rather are moving Boulder into the future.
    • Support the very special importance in this town of public access to public lands.

Fenno Hoffman – Boulder citizens took note of Fenno two years ago, when this architect and urban planner rose to prominence with his extremely insightful and progressive solutions on how to improve Boulder’s urban environment.

BOULDER AREA REALTORS ASSOC (BARA) 9/27/2011

    FIDOS:

The group, which advocates for dog access on Boulder open space properties, is endorsing incumbents Ken Wilson and George Karakehian, as well as newcomer candidates Dan King and Fenno Hoffman.

"These endorsements are intended to inform others about the candidates FIDOS recognizes as best suited to lead the city of Boulder, promote fiscally responsible green energy, protect our natural environment and preserve off- and on-leash access for dogs and their guardians." FIDOS, 9/28/2011

    YELLOW SCENE MAGAZINE:

  • (10/14/2011)  "Fenno Hoffman tends to focus on the issues of land-use and planning—specifically compact development and density—but he also offers a straight-forward and sensible outlook that he would bring to all decision-making. He says the corporate personhood amendment oversteps the council’s scope, and he would like to see Boulder improve regional collaboration, especially on land-use and transportation issues

  • CITY OF LYONS, Former Mayor

"I was the Mayor of Lyons, just up the road, which like it or not is a microcosm of Boulder, at least inasmuch as we faced nearly identical issues (with still more limited resources).  I'm back in Boulder and thrilled to see my old friend step up to public service!  I can assure Boulder voters that Fenno has more of the requisite skills for public service than most seasoned incumbants, let alone new candidates. Few elected officials begin their terms with anything like the skillset needed to effectively lead and govern, and many don't hone those skills whilst in office either.  For Boulder to have the chance to put someone like Fenno in office is a rare alignment of skill and opportunity.  These days, we face a drought of truly qualified people in elected politics, generally.  Fenno is an oasis of skill, intelligence, and capability." - Timothy Kyer, Former Mayor, City of Lyons

  • DAILY CAMERA: Five for City Council: We endorse mix of newcomers, incumbents (2009)

  • By Erika Stutzman, Posted: 10/11/2009 01:00:00 AM MDT (see "Press" web page for full story)

"Some of the city issues...have illustrated a marked divide on the council. ...we did see this election as an opportunity to look at the council as a whole unit, including those members who remain seated, to select five candidates who represent a broader spectrum of our residents' philosophies for City Council.

Fenno Hoffman's ideas about smart growth and urban development won't win over the entire council every time, but do present both a good balance and compelling views about current and future trends, and how they may impact our entire region, including surrounding towns. His background as an architect and urban planner will serve the city well..."

    BOULDER WEEKLY: Top Five (2009)

"We endorse Hoffman because he will bring authenticity and a fresh perspective to the council. His answers to our questions, unlike most of the other candidates' responses, did not follow the most politically correct, mainstream, conformist views that public officials tend to recite. His experience as an architect and a member of the city's own Downtown Design Advisory Board will be a resource to council, as well."  --Boulder Weekly, 10/09

FairFAR.org: "Cream of the Crop" (2009)

Fenno Hoffman stands head and shoulders above the other candidates running for election this year. Fenno is the only candidate who consistently points out that our current zoning and building codes have "suburban DNA" in them that prevents us from achieving our other environmental goals: reducing carbon footprints by housing more of our workforce, creating a walkable city with nodes of density along its transportation corridors, and revitalizing and rezoning the city’s neighborhoods and commercial centers to be more humane. At the neighborhood forums FairFAR attended, we were also impressed that Fenno is also the fastest candidate to leave the podium to sit down at the table with the voters and actually listen to them.

    Elephant Journal:, 2009

"Fenno Hoffman. This guy’s brilliant. He’s the only one on Council who reallllly gets that sustainability can’t be defined within the Boulder Bubble...He’s Mr. Tough Love, and he delievers it well...vote for him...you’ll be supporting an innovative, brave, intelligent man...one of the candidates who’s both “green” and “practical.” He’s the go-to guy among the candidates on urban design. Don’t know where he gets the energy."

"As the candidate that understands Boulder's policies can not be done in a vacuum you lead the pack in regional understanding.    As Erie, Louisville, Superior, and Lafayette remain part of the solution to Boulder's housing challenges, we must work together to ensure policies around transportation, congestion, and climate change are viewed regionally.    Your willingness to even say that shows your leadership and courage.  Good luck!"  - Mayor Andrew J. Leslie Durgin, Beverly Sears and Rich Lopez: Candidates for Boulder’s Past

Letter to the Editor, Posted by Daily Camera staff, Thursday, October 29th 2009

"This Boulder City Council election IS a potential crossroads. We have endorsed Fenno Hoffman because we can vote to make Boulder more livable and IMPROVE our quality of life, or we can vote to maintain our currently unsustainable "suburban" footprint. We can strive to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, or we can ignore regional sprawl, build no affordable housing, suffer our diminishing quality of life, accept Boulder’s above national average carbon footprint, and spend the rest of our lives behind a steering wheel. We can do better!

Several candidates for City Council focus on "preserving" our current lifestyle and resisting the push to IMPROVE Boulder. They commit to governing by paying attention to what the "vast majority of citizens want", based apparently on the people who happen to attend public hearings. They assume Boulder’s citizens "want" to drive everywhere to do just about everything; that Boulder’s work force "wants" to live in neighboring communities (so 60,000 of them can drive into Boulder to work every day). These candidates are mesmerized by our past, not envisioning our future.

They admit "some course corrections are needed by our city government." However, if Boulder is lead by those who fight the very course corrections we need to achieve environmental, social & economic sustainability, then the term "leader" loses all meaning.

We can reduce our carbon footprint, strengthen our economy and save our environment, but the status quo is clearly not the answer. To his credit, Fenno Hoffman is challenging us to look beyond our backyards towards a sustainable future and a better quality of life. Protect your children’s future. Include Boulder’s working families. Make neighborhoods walkable. Strengthen our economy and above all else, VOTE!

Fenno Hoffman’s voice is critically needed on Boulder’s City Council, and we urge you to vote for him."

-Leslie Durgin, Beverly Sears & Rich Lopez, former Mayor, former member of City Council, and former Deputy Mayor, respectively
